Brasil Sorridente

The Brazilian population faced long periods of shortage of dental care, resulting in millions of compatriots never having the opportunity to see a dentist in their lives.

To deal with this situation, the Brazilian government took a significant measure in 2004, with the aim of transforming the reality of the most disadvantaged parts of society.

The central purpose has always been to simplify access to oral health services, since a lack of oral hygiene can trigger a series of health problems which, in turn, translate into high public costs in the future.

Thus, aiming to prevent such scenarios, the Smiling Brazil Project, which established the Unified Health System (SUS) as one of the means to provide free care with qualified professionals.

This program, established in 2004, currently comprises more than 1030 Dental Specialty Centers and 185 mobile units distributed throughout the Brazilian territory.

Where are dental appointments held?

The consultations will be carried out in the service units of the Unified Health System (SUS), that is, in the Basic Health Units (UBS), in the Emergency Care Units (UPA) and in the Dental Specialty Centers (CEO).

Each of these health centers will be equipped with four dental offices, an X-ray machine and a laboratory specializing in dental prosthetics.

The availability of this equipment is ensured by the Ministry of Health, which plays a fundamental role in organizing and supervising the project.

The implementation of these care structures occurs through partnerships established with intermunicipal health consortia, city halls of the respective cities and university institutions.
