What is the BPC?

The Continuous Payment Benefit is a right guaranteed by the Organic Social Assistance Law (LOAS) and represents fundamental financial support for those who need it.
But it is important to highlight: this benefit is not a retirement and does not require prior contributions to the INSS.
Furthermore, it does not include the payment of the 13th salary nor does it generate a death pension.
Therefore, to be entitled to the benefit, the main criterion is per capita family income. It must be equal to or less than 1/4 of the minimum wage.
But how is this calculated? In this case, you have to add up all the family's income and then divide by the number of people living in the house.
In addition to income, people with disabilities need to undergo a medical and social assessment at the INSS.
How do I request the Continuous Payment Benefit?
A crucial step to access the benefit is to register with the Federal Government's Single Registry for Social Programs.
This registration must be done before requesting the benefit. Without it, nothing gets done!
The request for the Continuous Payment Benefit must be made through the INSS service channels, which include telephone number 135 (free from landlines), the “Meu INSS” website or application and also the Social Security Agencies (APS).
When applying, you must present an identification document with a photo – simple copies are accepted, but everyone in the family, including children and teenagers, must be registered in the Single Registry and have a CPF.
Who is entitled to the BPC?
Born or naturalized Brazilians and people of Portuguese nationality residing in Brazil are entitled to the Continuous Payment Benefit.
Elderly people aged 65 and over and people with disabilities of any age are eligible, as long as the disability is long-term (minimum of 2 years) and causes significant impediments.
Important Notes
- You cannot accumulate the BPC with other benefits from Social Security or other schemes, except medical assistance, special pensions of an indemnity nature and remuneration under an apprenticeship contract;
- To calculate income, the beneficiary is considered, spouse or partner, parents or stepfather, single siblings, single children and stepchildren and wards, all living under the same roof;
- In addition to income, the person with a disability undergoes a medical and social assessment carried out by INSS specialists;
- You can check whether the benefit has been granted by accessing “My INSS” or calling 135. The INSS makes payment using a specific magnetic card for the Continuous Payment Benefit, checking or savings account.
Updates and special attention

The Continuous Payment Benefit is always being updated. Therefore, it is important to inform yourself about the latest changes in legislation and application procedures.
An example is the possibility of discounting healthcare and diaper expenses for elderly people or people with disabilities when assessing family income.
In municipalities in a state of public calamity recognized by the Federal Government, beneficiaries have some additional facilities, such as withdrawing the benefit on the first day of the payment schedule.
Conclusion
Ultimately, the BPC is a valuable resource for many Brazilians, offering financial support to the elderly and people with disabilities.
Therefore, if you fit the criteria or know someone who does, it is worth seeking out more information and guaranteeing this very important right.
However, don't forget: being well informed is the first step to accessing the benefits that are rightfully yours!
