What is the South American Cup?
Since its establishment in 2002, the Copa Sudamericana has established itself as the second most prestigious club competition in South America, under the auspices of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL).
The tournament comprises a total of 56 teams, representing the ten countries affiliated to the CONMEBOLThe teams take part in three different stages: the group stage, the knockout stage and the exciting final.
Starting in the group stage, the teams are divided into eight groups, each made up of four teams.
Progression to the knockout stage is guaranteed by the three best teams in each group, who go on to seek glory.
In the knockout phase, the teams face each other in exciting knockout matches, following a back and forth format.
The first leg takes place at the stadium of the team with the poorest record in the group stage, while the second leg is played on the pitch of the team with the best record in the group stage.
The icing on the cake is the eagerly awaited final, played over two legs. The first match takes place at the stadium of the team that performed best in the group stage.
The second match, on the other hand, takes place in the territory of the team that performed less well in the initial phase.
To crown the winner, the Copa Sudamericana has an additional prize in store: the title guarantees direct qualification for the next edition of the Copa Libertadores.
Even the runners-up won't leave empty-handed and could also secure a place in next year's Copa Libertadores.
